HVAC systems, whether residential or commercial, should regularly be checked and inspected to increase both their longevity and your comfort. It is a well-known fact that properly maintained heating and cooling systems can save their owners considerable amounts of money. On the other hand, poorly maintained and unfit systems can turn out to be bottomless pits, eating away from your budget by requiring constant repairs and replacements. With winter and cold weather behind us and Spring in full swing, now is the right time to check your cooling systems and prepare yourself in time for the oncoming Summer heat. This means that apart from the regular monthly maintenance, an HVAC Spring maintenance checkup is in order. This is especially true for cooling systems and cooling components of heating/cooling systems. Here are some of the things you can do today to save yourself money and trouble further down the road when the temperature hits the 80s and 90s.
Check your outdoor unit

First check your outdoor unit for dirt, rotten leaves, and dust, as these can cause a serious increase in energy and fuel consumption. Also, make sure that nothing is blocking the air intake of the unit. This means covers, lids, blankets or any other nearby object which might interrupt, block or decrease the air intake. Make sure the panels are rust-free and not physically damaged. Physical damage mostly comes from the elements and animals seeking shelter. Lastly, you want to take a look on the inside for bird nests, rodent lairs and loose or cut wires.

Check the outdoor drains and pipes

This part gets frequently overlooked, forgotten and moved to the end of the checkup list. It is highly advisable to check all the outside drains and pipes, as their malfunction can cause significant damage to both the heating/cooling system and your back yard. All clogs should be cleared as soon as they`re spotted to prevent any eventual spills and leaks. Damaged pipe insulation can rack up the bills quite a bit as it increases the fuel and energy consumption.

Check the thermostat

Thermostat is the brains of your heating and cooling system and it should get proper attention. The badly set thermostat is equally inefficient as a broken or outdated one. Make sure the thermostat is set up properly and that it functions correctly before the cooling season begins.

Check the indoor pipes, vents and drains

Just like their outdoor counterparts, indoor ducts and filters play a big role in system`s overall efficiency and longevity. Worn, damaged or clogged lines can also mess up the thermostat and send the bills through the roof. While the filter replacement is a fairly easy and frequent affair, repair and replacement of the pipes and insulation are best performed by skilled professionals. This goes for repairs, removal, and replacement of all other components of your heating and cooling systems.

Check and replace air filters

Air filters are responsible for the quality of the air that you breathe and it is important to keep them in check. Though many systems and filters require more frequent checks and replacements, it is wise to include the filter check into your spring maintenance checkup list. Many residential and commercial systems suffer from dirty and clogged filters, causing you, in turn, to breathe in more pollutants and dust. Moreover, it can significantly hinder the performance of the heating coil. Dust and pet hair are the most common causes of air filter clogs.

Check the indoor wiring

Indoor and outdoor wires should be checked and inspected before the cooling season begins. Similar to their outdoor counterparts, indoor wires can easily be damaged by rodents and other small animals. Also, loose and burnt wires can be very hazardous.

Check the refrigerant levels

Proper refrigerant levels play a big role in your system`s efficiency. Too high or too low and the system will end up consuming more energy or fuel than it is necessary. In the long run, inefficient systems wear and break down a lot faster than properly optimized ones.

The test drive

After you`ve thoroughly inspected the system and made sure everything is in order, it is time to test drive the system to check if there are still some hidden problems. If the system, when turned on, does not start to cool the house/office at its regular and expected pace, the chance is that some issues still exist. If that`s the case, turn it off and go through the list once more.
